10 Best End of the World Movies (and the LifeSaver Purifier that would help most)
We all love a good disaster movie; working out which of the characters are going to make it to the end - and which most definitely aren't - is always fun. While many films focus on just one event, one town, one building or even one boat, there are some epic ones that assume the entire planet will be affected - by climate change, natural disaster, war or disease.
There's nothing like a spirited debate on what would be the best course of action during one of these adventures. We thought we'd work out which LifeSaver solution would be most helpful should the world break. (May include spoilers)
1. Deep Impact (1998)
A comet hurtling toward Earth could mean the end of all human life, but some crusty old astronauts plant explosives on it to break it up into more manageable chunks. Most of the film focuses on the build up to impact rather than the aftermath, but huge tsunamis, nuclear-sized explosions, and the subsequent chaos leave billions of people without homes, and play havoc with the world infrastructure. Clearly, under the thoughtful leadership of the US President (Morgan Freeman), the world will eventually get back to normal but, in the meantime:
The LifeSaver Jerrycan would provide each displaced family with access to safe drinking water for a couple of years - more than enough time for President Freeman to get things fixed up.
2. 2012 (2009)
Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) tries to keep his family safe as the world literally starts to turn upside down. As they rush from perilous event to even more perilous event, finally ending up on an enormous and well-equipped lifeboat, they need something extra robust they can carry with them:
The LifeSaver Bottle is quick and easy to fill, and holds a generous 750ml of water. Perfect for much needed gulps of water after chasing down airplanes and traversing glaciers.
3. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
After the Gulf Stream stops 'streaming', a series of superstorms throws the whole of the northern hemisphere into an ice age, driving survivors south to countries ill-equipped to deal with huge numbers of refugees. Most of the film follows Dennis Quaid's efforts to reach his son, who is holed up in the New York Library, burning books to stay warm, but, clearly, the refugee camps hastily forming in South America and Africa will need to get large scale water purification set up to meet the demands of temporary hospitals and accommodation:
A LifeSaver C2 can purify up to 1,000,000 litres of water providing 300 people with drinking water for up to six years - more than enough time to let things up north defrost.
4. I am Legend (2007)
One man and his dog experiment on naked flesh-eating mutants to find the cure for the cure that caused the disease (yes - no more cancer - just a mindless desire to eat other people whilst naked...). His living arrangements aren't too bad; he's holed up in his apartment - but the amenities are no longer running so he needs to fetch water:
A LifeSaver Cube will provide him (and his dog) with enough water for a day or two on one refill, and won't weigh him down too much while he runs from the mutants.
5. Greenland (2020)
Another heroic dad trying to get his family to safety - this time an underground bunker in Greenland - while avoiding other desperate families. They are on the move and need something to purify water for the whole family:
A LifeSaver Liberty would work. It's less 'obvious' so won't be a target for people intent on pillaging as they go, and can be used to refill everyone's water bottle when needed.
6. WALL-e (2008)
Bit left-field this one. A solitary robot has been left on Earth to try and clean up the mess humans have made, while they all swan off on an all-inclusive space ship to get fat. When WALL-e finally spots signs of life reappearing, he has to let the spaceship know, so that humans can come back. You can't help thinking that the mess would have been cleared up a lot quicker if people had stayed to help...
If they had, there are some serious pollution issues going on here, so it's safe to assume there are extra nasties in the water supply. A LifeSaver Jerrycan Graphene:Ultra will help sort that out, keeping the human caretakers safe while they bring the planet back to life.
7. This is the End (2013)
A comedy take on the traditional disaster format as a group of Hollywood celebrities are trapped in their home, as the world disintegrates around them. As supplies run short, their friendships are tested to the limit.
Clearly these guys are going to be more concerned about beer than water so we're not sure a LifeSaver will make a blind bit of difference to any of them but, if they did seek our advice, we'd recommend a LifeSaver Jerrycan and that they take in in turns to refill it.
8. The Book of Eli (2013)
Denzel Washington navigates the world 30 years after war has turned the world into wasteland. He's on the move all the time, carrying something that's going to change everything, so we're thinking ultra-lightweight in turns of water purifier.
It has to be the LifeSaver Wayfarer; pocket-sized, he can fill his water bottle up when ever he finds a source, and the scavenger hose means he can keep an eye out for baddies while he's doing it.
9. Snowpiercer (2013)
Following a failed attempt at reversing global warming, an ice age destroys all life on earth except for those that now live on a self-sufficient circumnavigational train. The people in 'third-class' are tired of the conditions they are forced to live in, so head through the train to first class, to take control. One of them detonates a bomb which derails the train and leaves the survivors stranded outside. They promptly spot a polar bear which tells them that life wasn't actually destroyed, and their time might have been better spent fixing things, rather than going round in circles.
The first thing these people need to do is set up a base camp; a LifeSaver C1 would be ideal, providing up to 500,000 litres of drinking water. For those that have to leave the camp to go hunting for food and supplies, a LifeSaver Liberty will keep them safely hydrated for the day.
10. The Postman (1997)
Kevin Costner wanders around a post-apocalyptic USA, delivering mail and pretending that a central government has been formed, and that things will soon get back to the way they were. Bringing hope to some survivors, he upsets others who have established their own way of doing things.
As a man on the move, the LifeSaver Wayfarer is clearly the way to go and will easily fit in his mail sack.
So there you have it. LifeSaver can clearly provide the perfect solution to almost any world-ending event, whether you're last man standing or part of a motley group of random survivors.
Of course disaster movies are produced entirely for our entertainment but, for many people, emergency preparedness is incredibly important, not just for piece of mind, but for the very real prospect of being cut off from utilities for extended periods of time. We have a purifier to suit any budget and situation, and once primed, they remain on stand-by indefinitely.
